Taranaki Sustainable Living Fair 2008

Everyone had a great time at the Fair on Saturday 5 April 2008 at Inglewood High School.
The weather was perfect - a warm, fine day with a gentle wind for a while to get the school's turbine going.

More than 3000 people attended of all ages and there was plenty going on all day, with the stalls both inside and outside busy the whole time and the speakers and workshops popular.

The children enjoyed arts and crafts, facepainting, flax weaving, unicycles and juggling (and some adults too!)

Aim / Vision

To increase public awareness of the options for extending environmental and economic sustainability of our lives and businesses in Taranaki and New Zealand.

Objectives

The three main objectives of the Fair are:
1. to increase the public visibility of New Zealand businesses specialising in sustainability related products and services
2. to inform the public with up-to-date information on practical steps for reducing carbon emissions and living sustainably, through workshops and speakers
3. to provide an opportunity for increased networking for local, regional and national organisations that are already involved in promoting sustainability.

Purpose

Sustainable Living refers to the ability to meet our present needs without compromising the needs of future generations.

Studies show the New Zealand public is concerned about the implications of climate change and is motivated to make necessary changes in their lifestyle. However, most people are at a loss to know where to start. In part this is because they lack information about the large range of NZ entrepreneurs who offer products and services that could help them reduce their energy consumption. The Sustainable Living Fair is being held to bring information about these businesses and services to the public, in one place, where it is easily accessible.

More and more people are becoming aware of environmental issues and want to know how they can make a difference. The Fair aims to bring together the many options available to people so they can make a difference and choose a more sustainable way of life. It is also a way people can link up with local groups and others interested in sustainable living.
